MIG Welding Services for Your Project

Whether you need aluminium repairs or fabrication, our team provides reliable and precise results custom manufactured to your needs. At Smart Weld, we provide professional MIG welding services for both small-scale and large-scale projects in Canterbury and New Zealand. Whether you need repairs, fabrication, or industrial welding solutions, our team provides reliable and precise results custom manufactured to your needs. MIG welding, also known as Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), is the perfect solution for durable and fast welds across a wide range of applications.

Why Choose MIG Welding?

MIG welding is renowned for being efficient, fast, and effective on various metals, such as steel, stainless steel, and aluminium. It is the go-to method for projects that require high productivity and strong, aesthetically pleasing welds.

What is Pulse MIG Welding?

Pulsed MIG welding, also known as Pulse Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW-P) is an electronically controlled spray-transfer MIG process. The current alternates, or pulses, between a high peak current and a low background current, up to several hundred times per second. With each pulse, the peak current pinches off a droplet of wire and propels it to the weld joint, while the background current maintains the arc at a low enough power level so that short-circuit can’t occur.

Best known as a great process for welding aluminium, however, it is also an excellent process for welding with stainless-steel and bronze wires. In ideal conditions, Pulse MIG can achieve results that are comparable to TIG welding, however, the increased productivity is superior to TIG process.

Pulse Mig gases used.

For Carbon steels

A shielding gas with at least 80% argon is usually required. A common choice is 90% argon and 10% carbon dioxide.

For Aluminum

Argon or argon/helium blends are typically used. CO2 blends should be avoided.

For Stainless steel

A 98% argon and 2% carbon dioxide blend is typically used. To prevent sensitisation, the carbon dioxide content should be limited to no more than 5%

Benefits of MIG welding include:

  • Speed and Precision: Ideal for quick jobs with minimal clean-up.
  • Versatility: Works on thin sheets to thicker materials, perfect for a variety of metals.
  • Strong Welds: Durable joints that stand the test of time.
  • Minimal Waste: Produces cleaner welds, reducing spatter and post-weld grinding.
  • Lower heat input: meaning minimal distortion.
  • Spatter is significantly reduced, or even eliminated.
  • Visually appealing welds: Added value to the finished product.
  • Higher deposition rates: Increased efficiency & faster travel speeds.
  • Tighter weld pool control: Ideal for out-of-position welding.

Applications of MIG Welding

Our MIG welding services can be applied across various sectors, including:

  • Pulse Mig: this welding process is ideal for aluminium welding, especially if you want a better-quality weld and appearance.
  • Structural Steel Fabrication: Weld beams, columns, and supports for construction projects.
  • Home and Residential Projects: Custom gates, fences, and decorative metalwork.
  • Industrial Manufacturing: Mass production and repairs of machinery or metal parts.
  • Marine Industry: Aluminium and stainless-steel components for boats and marine structures.
